Review and Giveaway: JJ Heller's Album "Loved"

Available for purchase today is J.J. Heller's new album, "LOVED"

I had never heard of her until I was asked if I wanted to do a review of this album, but just one listen to a sample song and I was hooked.

This video, "Who You Are" seems to be just life going about as normal. Lately my mind has been thinking about friends who lost a child some years back. I am sure if you ask them, life is still just putting one foot in front of the other. The lyrics of this song are haunting. God "lost" His Child. This album clocks in at just under 39 minutes with 10 songs. They are beautiful both in style (although some are a little more rockier with drums). The lyrics are even stronger than the songs.

One of my favorite songs is "Redemption" The chorus says "We're alive for the very first time". Isn't that the way redemption feels? Knowing that, as it also says in the song, "Everything broken will be whole again". That's pretty much beyond our wildest dreams, right? Knowing what is cursed is redeemed, what is broken will be made whole. It's a comforting thought, and lends itself to a wonderful song.   The whole album is to give hope for what can happen in the future.  Our world is full of hurt and pain, but someday. . . someday in Heaven if not before, we will be made whole, restored, and filled with joy.  This album reminds of of what will be while we're still in a world filled with pain.  Yet it's not pithy, but touches on real human emotion acknowledging hurt, grief, and disappointment.

JJ Heller and her husband, David, did an excellent job of writing these songs. She sings lead vocals, he does background vocals and the acoustic guitar. I haven't been a big fan of contemporary Christian music the last few years, but if this album is any indication of what may be on the horizon, I am looking forward to the future! I really loved this album, and I highly recommend it.

Blog Tour Review and Giveaway: The One Good Thing

The One Good Thing by Kevin Alan Milne
Published:  March 12, 2013
Publisher: Center Street
Pages:  384

At the beginning of “One Good Thing”, Nathan Steen seems like the perfect man.  He could be the man that romance books write about -- loving, kind, perfect family man.  He always carries stones, and when he does a good deed, he moves a stone to a different pocket so he knows if he’s done all his good deeds for the day.  Sometimes he does something small, or he might take half a day (and his family) to help clean an elderly woman’s home.

But Nathan carries a secret.  Only one person knows his secret, and that person is not his wife Halley.  It isn’t until a freak accident when he’s helping a Hispanic man named Jesus who is stranded by the roadside that the facade Nathan has been living behind shatters -- because he is killed.  The law firm he works for allows Halley access to his computer so she can retrieve any personal documents.

That’s when she sees the e-mail from Madeline Zuckerman that references “our little girl”.  Halley has never heard of this woman, nor did she know Nathan had any other children.  Alice, Nathan’s daughter is convinced there has to be some mistake, but even her grandparents know who Madeline Zuckerman is, but Alice isn’t swayed.  She knows everyone is wrong because her dad wouldn’t have another child or he would have told her.

This book chronicles the story of the Steen family as they come to grips with finding out that their hero wasn’t as big of a hero as they thought.  It takes us back to Nathan’s high school days, introduces us to Madeline (or as she was called back then Fatty Maddy).  Old wounds get reopened, and hurt runs deep when there’s a two decade long secret, but in the midst of hurt there’s honor.

I loved this book.  I read it in two sittings.  While I enjoy reading, it’s rare a book makes me cry, but this one did.  I think Kevin seemed too perfect in the beginning, but then we learn he’s carrying a secret that could shatter everything everyone believed about him.  At that point he became real to me.   I thought the fact he was helping Jesus when he died was a little farfetched.  Sure, I know there are lots of Hispanic people named Jesus, but I felt this was taking Nathan’s charitable acts too far.

I thought the writing was excellent, and the story was woven in such a way that different characters told their story, but at the same time even with going back into time we don’t learn Nathan’s true secret until the present.  Not everyone lives happily ever after, but healing and restoration takes place.  Of course there’s no bring Nathan back, and for that reason the book is sad, but what if there were more Nathan Steens in the world?  it would be a better place.

VeggieTales: The Little House That Stood Review and Givewaway

I enjoy most VeggieTales videos.  I love the talking vegetables, the jokes that probably go over kids' heads, and the silly song that appear in each episode.   I was excited when I received an offer to review VeggieTales:  The Little House that Stood and this was a DVD that I enjoyed as much as the others.

The video starts out with Bob and Larry wanting to do different sketches.  Larry wants to do a fairy tale story, and Bob wants to do a parable from the Bible, so they compromise and Bob becomes a builder of houses.  The parable of the wise man building his house upon the rock is explained in this episode.  As usual, VeggieTales takes liberties with the story to make it amusing, and in this episode the Three Little Pigs come to town and each hires a different builder.  One builds with brick, one with hay, and one with sticks.  Cabbageville gets hit with a horrible flood, and many structures are wiped away, but there are some buildings that stand.  Each one of those has something in common.  It was built by Bob, and each one had a solid fountation before construction began.

The silly song in this episode was not my favorite, but it was cute.   It was "Happy Tooth Day".  In this, Larry the Cucumber sings about his solitary tooth, including showing a baby picture of when he got his tooth.  He's afraid it might be lonely, so he buys it some friends.

The final section of the video was my least favorite.  Bob the Tomato stars as Humpty Dumpty, mayor of Gooseville.  It included lots of nursery rhyme references, but I felt it didn't have any real point to it.  I suppose it was to be about helping your neighbor, but it didn't come across as very biblical.   Just as a lesson, and the constant whining to Bob as mayor was a more than just a little annoying, especially the shrieks of Little Bo Peep.  Everyone went directly to Bob the Tomato with their problems, not trying to help one another or seeking help of someone at church or praying about them.  Still, this section was cute in its own way.  As an adult who loves VeggieTales, this segment is one I would be content to never watch again, although youngsters may feel differently.

Overall, this was another strong, solid episode of VeggieTales and one I would recommend.

This episode goes on sale March 5th but you can go ahead and order it here:

The Utter Relief of Holiness Review and Givewaway

The Utter Relief of HolinessThe Utter Relief of Holiness by John Eldredge

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have been a longtime fan of John Eldredge.  I would almost venture to say he is my favorite author.  At the very least he is the author of one of my favorite books.  So when I heard he had written The Utter Relief of Holiness, I couldn’t wait to read it.

Like his other books, Elderdge takes the topic and presents it in a clear but challenging way with great application.  However, as excited as I was about this book, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.  I wanted to LOVE this book.  As it was, I only liked it.   I believe his previous writing had me spoiled and set my expectations a little too high.  However, if you are a new to Eldredge’s books, you will likely really enjoy this book.

I did jot down several quotes in my reading notebook.  My favorite is this:

“People who knew themselves to be anything but holy found the holiness of Jesus winsome, open-armed, and utterly compelling.  Is this how you have understood holiness?  It changes everything when you do.”  (page 38)

Having grown up in a church that took a theological idea to extremes that we could be sinless in this life, I almost wondered if Eldredge took the idea of being able to achieve holiness to extremes.  Can we really be so holy that we “simply don’t struggle with whatever it is that haunts you, it’s not an issue.  That’s the utter relief of holiness.  That’s what happens with the life of Jesus invades yours.”  (page 43)  It’s a great thought.  It would be wonderful if I truly believed it, but I sit back and I wonder.  The Apostle Paul had a thorn in his flesh.  Although we aren’t told what is was.  Perhaps it was a physical malady, but what if it was a sin he struggled with?  We don’t know and that leaves me pondering if holiness the way that Elderedge depicts is really something we can achieve this side of heaven.

That said, I also think it’s a great book on the topic.  There is a lot of Scripture contained in it, so it would make a great book from which to do a personal Bible study.  Because of the amount of Scripture, it would be ideal to use in a Bible study or Sunday School class.

Do I recommend this book?  Yes.  Will it be one of the favorite books I’ve read this year?  Most likely.  Did it live up to what I’ve thought of his previous books?  No.  Worth the read?   Absolutely.

Etched Upon My Heart Review and Giveaway

Etched...Upon My Heart: What We Learn and Why We Never ForgetEtched...Upon My Heart: What We Learn and Why We Never Forget by Jill Kelly

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Etched . . . Upon My Heart:  What We Learn and Why We Never Forget is a book that literally brought me to tears.  Jill Kelly is wife of former Buffalo Bill quarterback Jim Kelly, and mother to two girls, to whom she dedicated this book, and one son, Hunter, who passed away at age eight from a rare disease.

In this book, she takes eight ideas / qualities and expounds on them from her life experiences.  She discusses losing Hunter to Leukodystrophy and the challenges that surrounded that as well as other life challenges.  They range from love to death, and while telling these stories she bares her heart.  The stories are ones any woman can relate to, or at the least empathize with her.  She recalls memories that will bring a smile to your face, such as when her daughter was insist that her husband pray to become a Christian.  Some stories make you wonder how you would feel -- what if you organized a fundraiser in honor of your child who passed away and saw his picture on flyers which at the end of the day were discarded? She tells stories of hope.  When she was doing a Bible study and couldn’t remember when she had been betrayed, healing emanated from that recollection.

This is a unique book.  It’s not a devotional (although it could be used as such.)  Nor is it a Bible study.  It’s someone sharing from their heart, some of the deepest things that as I read it, I repeatedly thought to myself, “If this happened to me, I don’t know if I could ever share this with the world.”

I think this would make an excellent book for a book club, women’s group, or even a Sunday School class.  Through a group discussion, you might even be inspired to write your own legacy to your children of God’s love and faithfulness in your life by telling your story.  I can’t recommend this book enough.

Sister of Silence Book Review

FTC disclaimer:  This post contains affiliate links.

When Sister of Silence first came out, I immediately bought a copy.  The author, Daleen Berry,  used to work at our local newspaper in Preston County West Virginia, and I’m always interested in any non-fiction book with regional ties.  I very much enjoyed reading about people I knew and even knowing as I read the book that my father was one of the people the author interviewed at the sheriff's office for her job.

Sister of Silence is much more than just a book for those who live in our area.  The story is riveting. It is a hard memoir to read. When she was only thirteen and Eddie is twenty when he begins having sex with her.  She doesn’t realize this is rape so she tells no one.  This continues off and on for years until she gets pregnant.  She believes she will no longer be desired by anyone because she is “used” and so she and Eddie marry.  By the time she is twenty-two she has four small children.

Eddie becomes physically abusive, at one point dragging her down stairs and causing a huge gash in her leg.  She tells no one -- thus the title “Sister of Silence”.  Once he loses his job, she has to find a job and is hired by the local paper.  As she starts reporting domestic violence stories she realizes that is exactly what is happening to her.

This is not light reading.  It is about childhood and marital sexual abuse, domestic violence, postpartum depression, and thoughts of suicide.  It’s a riveting book, but can also help others know they are not alone in their situation and give them hope for escape.

The one thing I would have changed about the book is the ending.  She goes into great detail about the things she survived, but I wanted to also hear about what happened after.  (This has since been published as Shattering the Silence!)  But I couldn't put this book down.  I give it a five star rating and I recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about domestic violence.  It would also make a great gift to someone you think is going through a similar situation and don't know how to approach her and ask her if you can do anything to help.

Review and Giveaway: Table Grace Dice

I recently received a very unique item to review from Catholic Family Gifts.  This is a die (singular of dice, but I'll refer to it as dice since I like the word better!).  It is large for a dice -- about 2 1/4 inches.  It is wooden and weighs over four ounces.  On each of the six sides is a prayer you can use for saying grace before meals.

The prayers include:

Bless our food, dear God we pray, and bless us, too throughout this day. Keep us safe and close to you. Keep us just in all we do. Amen.

We thank you, Lord, for generous hearts, for sun and rainy weather. We thank you, Lord, for drink and food, and that we are together. Amen.

For life and food, for love and friends, for everything Thy Goodness sends, Almighty God, we thank Thee. Amen.

Thank you for the earth so sweet. Thank you for the food we eat. Thank you for the birds that sing. Thank you, God, for everything! Amen.

God, bless this food we are about to receive. Give bread to those who hunger, and hunger for charity and justice to us who have bread. Amen.

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty! Amen

What a neat idea to involve children in saying grace before you eat!   Those too little to read could roll it and allow an older brother or sister to read the prayer that comes face up, or allow mom or dad to read it.  Those who can read, this is a fun way to encourage prayer before meals.

My biggest concern about it is that it is wooden.  For an item like this it would likely be kept on the kitchen table, and I wonder about how it would hold up to spilled milk and juice.

It has rounded corners for safety.  Also, I do like the size.  It's too big for the youngest set to choke on.

This would be ideal if you are wanting to introduce saying grace before your family meals so that children will find it fun.  Or if you are looking for a way to have your children be more involved in praying.   I know I would have thought this was really neat when I was little!

You can purchase this for $11.95 plus shipping here:  Table Grace Dice from Catholic Family Gifts. They also sell a number of other items such as baptism gifts, cross necklaces, nativity scenes, VeggieTales DVDs, and many other items.

Catholic Family Gifts is going to give one of these away to one of my readers.  The giveaway is open to those 18 and older who live in the United States.  It ends at  11:59 pm on July 2st.

Review and Giveaway: Farm Rich Foods

When I was in high school, a friend's mom always invited all of us to her house.  She and her husband said (over the din of 50 teenagers) that if we were there, they knew we were staying out of trouble.  She always made food for us to eat.  I was thinking, though, how much easier it would have been if she would have just bought some Farm Rich products.

Their jalapeno peppers are delicious.  Just put them in the oven for sixteen minutes and you've got a great appetizer or teen snack! ! How quick and easy is that?  And while they are cooking, you can watch to make sure the teenagers don't wreck your house!  I love jalapeno peppers and these are absolutely delicious!  I sometimes buy some jalapeno snacks from a local fast food place, and these are even better, and of course more economical.   Just look how good these look!

Another time saving item is Farm Rich meatballs.  I chose to get the turkey meatballs.  These are super easy to prepare as well.  In fact you can put five in a microwave safe bowl, add a tablespoon water, cover, and microwave on high for two and a half minutes and you've got meatballs ready to use!

Unlike the jalapeno peppers there are recipes on the Farm Rich site for using the meatballs.  Just go to the product page and click on recipes and you'll find recipes such as blue cheese buffalo balls  and easy sloppy joes.

For my review, though, I decided to make two different meals with the meatballs.  The first I decided to go with the classic spaghetti and meatballs.  I boiled angel hair pasta, fixed the meatballs in the microwave and in less than 10 minutes, dinner was on the table.   I couldn't believe how quick and simple it was.  My mother loved the meatballs and her only complaint was I didn't make enough!

For a second meal with the meatballs, I decided to take one of my favorite meals and use meatballs instead.  I went ahead and microwaved the meatballs, then added them to the crock pot with two regular sized cans of mushroom soup.  I let it cook an hour and a half to two hours, boiled some noodles, then fixed some vegetables and once again, a super quick and easy meal that was delicious!

I'd never tried Farm Rich products before now and I have to say I am extremely impressed.  My mother keeps asking if I've bought more meatballs!  They certainly have her approval.  I loved the jalapeno peppers and this is going to be a treat for me on occasion.

Farm Rich makes a number of different items.  A few I haven't yet tried but hope to are the mushroomsqueso cheese bites, and mini bacon cheeseburgers.

If you haven't yet tried these, you are in luck because Farm Rich Foods is going to send two coupons each one good for a free item to one reader of The Radar Report.

The giveaway is good in the USA only to those 18 and above and ends June 9th at 11:59 pm.

FTC disclaimer:  I received two coupons for free products in exchange for hosting this review and giveaway.  The coupons in  no way influenced my review.

Uglee Ergonomic Pen Review and Giveaway

I gave my mother a set of Uglee Pens for her birthday.  She has carpal tunnel and lots of difficulty writing and I thought an ergonomic pen might be just the thing to help her be able to write with less discomfort.

As you can see, they look different from other pens.  What I didn't expect from them was that while they look different, the grips on them are actually soft.  I guess I would have known this if I read the website better, but I didn't expect it to be soft.  My mother loves the feel of the softness, and personally, I think it feels a little too different and I haven't used one enough to get used to it, so I'm going mainly on her reviews since she has been using one for a couple months now.

One thing that my mother did find with the Uglee pen is that the ink sometimes skips as she is writing.  She isn't sure if this is due to her error or the way the pen is manufactured.  She uses it almost daily, and that is her only complain.  She loves the feel because often it hurts her to write because of the problems she has with her hands.

You can order Uglee pens for $19.99 for a three pack (plus shipping and handling, but if you order multiple sets of the same color, you only pay shipping and handling once!)

I know this was a practical, unique, and appreciated gift to my mother who has difficulty writing. I'm sure you can think of someone in your life who could use these.  Even a child who is learning to write could benefit from these.  I know I had a hard time learning to write because I didn't want to hold my pencil correctly and when I did, I gripped it so hard it made my hands hurt, so these would also be ideal for a beginning writer for practice (at least with supervision as it is ink and not pencil).

Dr. Lee who designed the Uglee Pen is giving one of my blog readers a set of three in a random color.  The giveaway is open to the USA only.  Ends at 5/16 at 12:01 in the morning Eastern time.

WOW! You $aved How Much? review

This post contains affiliate links.

The author of Wow! You Saved How Much? asked if I would like to review her book.  My first reaction to the book was how thin it was.  It's only 52 pages, but then again that makes it easy to read, and I've seen some "how to coupon" books contain a lot of fluff or all kinds of extra details that can confuse the "newbie".  You certainly won't find any of that here.  It's a very well written, straight forward book that anyone can understand.

You might think coupons are a waste of time or boring or not worth it or a number of other excuses, but as you've read on my blog and as Renita Perrone teaches in Wow! You Saved How Much? you'll see those excuses are just that -- excuses.

I will say, though, that anyone can see some nice savings with coupons.  While this book does explain what I call "hard-core" couponing, you will learn the basics and if you use what you learn in this book it will pay for itself in the first trip to the grocery store.

Bottom line, this is a simple, easy to understand book about couponing.  I'd highly recommend it to anyone just starting out with coupons.

What I liked:   The concise, easy to follow way this book was put together.  I also liked the ideas of how to trade coupons, where to find them, and other information it took me a while to figure out when I was first learning to coupon.

What I didn't like:  She didn't mention coupons that spit out at the register when you buy certain items.  These can be a gold mine.  However, I understand this is for new coupon users, and that can be a bit confusing at times.   I did see on Amazon this is called "Volume 1" so possibly she is planning another book.

Also, this book was published in 2009, so information will be dated in this volume.

As mentioned, I received a book to review.  Receiving this book free did not influence my opinon whatsoever.  My opinions are my own.
