5 Favorite Rain Memories

I'm once again linking up at The Big White Farmhouse to participate in Five Faves.

It's been raining almost non-stop the last few days and I thought I would share my 5 favorite rain memories.  (In no particular order)

1.   Camping circa 1987.  My youth group went camping.  Thankfully there was a pop up trailer we used.  It down poured.  As I recall, everyone (boys and girls) ended up sleeping in the pop up trailer.  We listened to a Tiffany cassette so much that I can't hear I Think We're Alone Now without thinking of my high school youth group leader belting it out at the top of her lungs.

2.  Puddle Stomping circa 1990.    When I was in college, I had never been puddle stomping.  My mother never let me play in the rain, but one spring evening a friend gathered up some girls from our dorm and we had a massive puddle stomping evening.  Everyone was soaked, had a great time, and enjoyed homemade hot cocoa after our adventure.

3.  Camping circa 1990.  The same group of girls and I who went puddle stomping went camping.  I was the only one who had been camping before, I think.  Six college girls in a small tent in the rain.  What could go wrong?  I was elected to sleep in the screened in section, and I was just getting over bronchitis.  The tent started leaking at one point, and we left a miserable and grumpy group of girls.  It certainly wasn't fun at the time, but we still laugh about it, so it was certainly memorable.

4.  Church camp circa 1988.   Do you see a theme with camping here?  My cabin was at the sports field.  Rain started suddenly in torrents.  The volleyball pit because nothing but mud, but camp rules were we had to play until we were told otherwise.  (It was raining so hard we didn't hear the bell to signal for us to go to our dorms.)  Everyone was covered in mud from head to toe.  Our camp director was in a great 1980s style white suit -- pants and jacket.  He drove out to the sports field, and someone yelled, "Let's get him" and several mud-covered boys started running towards him.  He yelled, "You will not" and got in his car and drove off.  One of my roommates got in trouble for taking her shampoo outside and washing the mud off herself in the rain.  Personally I thought it was a pretty good idea.

5.  Church youth retreat 1993.  Thunderstorms sidelined our plans to go to a water park that day.  Instead we spent the day at a shopping mall.  The boys all bought silk shirts they found on sale.  Every single one of them.  (We ended up going to a local church that Sunday and that was back when people still dressed up in their Sunday best for church.  They all wore cut off jean shorts and silk shirts.  I'm sure we were all a sight!)  One boy bought a mauve colored shirt.  He had red hair.  He looked down at it, and asked, "Why did I buy such an ugly shirt?"  After seeing the shirt clash with his hair all morning, I had wondered the same thing!
